What is an electronic signature?
An electronic signature, or e-signature, is a way to get consent or approval on a document online.
For example, it can be a biometric signature on a PDF file, an “I Agree” checkbox, or a voice signature.
Electronic signature has the same legal standing as a handwritten signature as long as it adheres to e-signature regulations such as eIDAS in the European Union.
It also has specific details including who signed and when, therefore fully traceable.
Is electronic signature the same as digital signature?
No, electronic signature is not the same as digital signature.
A digital signature is used to guarantee the integrity of a document, ensuring that it is not tampered with, while an electronic signature is to indicate a person’s consent on an agreement or contract.
What are the types of e-signature?
According to EU’s eIDAS regulation, there are three types of electronic signatures: Electronic Signature, Advanced Electronic Signature and Qualified Electronic Signature.
An electronic signature is any kind of signature, where a person has expressed consent to be bound by the document signed.
An advanced electronic signature (AES) is an electronic signature that meets strict requirements, and thus has a higher level of security.
A qualified electronic signature (QES) is an advanced electronic signature created by a qualified signature creation device and has a qualified certificate issued by a Certificate Authority. It has a high level of security and trust.
